Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
